Every morning we all wake up and immediately check our phones. We go on social media and we see posts from our friends and family, but we also see new media posting stories. Yet these news articles/stories are being posted 24/7. We all have our preferred news sources and with what those media sources put out, we believe them. This is known as the Two-Step Flow Theory.

I personally follow New Channel 8, which is a news station based out of Tampa, Florida. Over the years that I have been watching/following this news channel, they have always proved that they are a trustworthy media source. This is a typical way to get local news that is accurate.

What we do not think about is the influencers that we follow and how we develop trust in these influencers. For me, I follow Mikayla Nogueira on TikTok. Mikayla has a huge following on TikTok and is known for being a great makeup artist. I, as a follower, believe in what she says as she shows what she is talking about in her videos. Since she has a huge following it makes me trust her more, as many people do follow her.

There are many ways to be a part of the two-step flow theory whether it is following an influencer on social media or simply following a news station. Deciding on what platform to trust is up to one’s decision. Research will need to be done to ensure that the information that is being shared is accurate. We see the Two-Step Flow Theory in action every day and it will continue to happen. It is up to individuals to choose where they get their news from and if it is accurate or not. It is best to be proactive in reading news sources from a reliable new source.
